Background of the study
Spiritual healing centers have long been an integral part of indigenous healthcare systems in Nigeria, offering alternative methods of treatment, especially in the context of drug addiction recovery. In Ilaje Local Government, these centers provide culturally grounded interventions that incorporate rituals, prayers, and traditional counseling to facilitate recovery (Ola, 2023). The integration of spirituality and healing addresses both physical and psychological dimensions of addiction, reflecting the community’s holistic approach to health (Adebayo, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these centers remains debated among healthcare professionals due to the lack of empirical data and standardized practices (Folorunso, 2025). This study explores the role of spiritual healing centers in addressing drug addiction, examining their methodologies, community perceptions, and the balance between spiritual and conventional medical treatments.

Statement of the problem
Ilaje Local Government faces a growing challenge with drug addiction, and the reliance on spiritual healing centers as a primary mode of recovery raises questions regarding their effectiveness and safety. The absence of standardized treatment protocols and empirical evaluations has led to mixed outcomes, complicating the integration of spiritual healing with modern addiction recovery programs (Ola, 2023; Folorunso, 2025). This study seeks to address these gaps by critically assessing the role of spiritual healing centers and identifying factors that influence their success in drug addiction recovery.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To investigate the effectiveness of spiritual healing centers in drug addiction recovery.
  2. To assess community perceptions regarding the role of spiritual interventions.
  3. To propose measures for integrating spiritual healing with modern addiction therapies.

Research questions:

  1. What are the perceived benefits of spiritual healing centers in addiction recovery?
  2. How do community members view the effectiveness of these centers?
  3. What factors influence the success of spiritual healing in drug addiction recovery?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Spiritual healing centers significantly contribute to positive drug addiction recovery outcomes.
  2. Community perceptions favor spiritual interventions over conventional treatments.
  3. Integrating spiritual and modern treatments enhances recovery success.

Significance of the study
This study is significant for its potential to bridge the gap between traditional spiritual healing and modern addiction treatment, offering a comprehensive perspective on recovery methods. Its insights will benefit healthcare policymakers and practitioners seeking to develop culturally sensitive, integrative approaches to drug addiction recovery (Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the role and effectiveness of spiritual healing centers in drug addiction recovery within Ilaje Local Government, focusing on traditional spiritual practices.

Definitions of terms:

  • Spiritual Healing Centers: Facilities that utilize spiritual and traditional methods to promote healing.
  • Drug Addiction Recovery: The process of overcoming dependency on drugs through various treatment modalities.
  • Integrative Treatment: The combination of traditional and modern therapeutic approaches.
